Located in Southwest Wisconsin's Hidden Valleys, on a ridge between the Mississippi River Coulee Region of hills and valleys and the Kickapoo River Valley, Westby was originally settled by Norwegian immigrants, and, still today the heritage is proudly displayed in the area. For Norwegian history, visit the Norskedalen Heritage Center and Skumsrud Heritage Farm in Coon Valley. For a Norwegian celebration, Westby celebtates its Scandianvian heritage by hosting two world-famous festivals. The annual 2-day Syttende Mai Fest held the weekend closest to Norway's Constitution Day on May 17, is a festive welcome to Spring. Highlights of the fest are the quilt show & sale, car show, arts and crafts, music, and a big parade on Sunday to commensurate the areas parade season. Enjoy Norwegian foods like lefse, rommogrot, progies, and local artisan demonstrating their heritage. In the winter, the annual February event is the Snowflake International Ski Jumping Tournament held in Timber Coulee just outside of Westby. Celebrating over 80 years of jumping, this competition attracts skiers from 10 or more countries plus U.S.A. and Canada. Thousands of spectators gather at the Snowflake jumping complex to watch competitor's speed down the 13-story tower and fly distances longer than a football field.
