Applebutter Inn Bed and Breakfast Description:
Built by Michael Christley in 1844, on land granted to encourage westward settlement, the original six-room farmhouse was built of bricks formed and fired on the premise. The 12-inch brick walls set on the 18-inch solid, hand-cut stone foundation, have stood the test of time with the Christley family and the family of Plenty Weston Steele as the only inhabitants in the home since 1844.
The present restoration, begun in 1987 with close attention to original detail, invites you to step back in time. Fine restored woodwork, exposed brick fireplaces and original chestnut and poplar flooring serve as a gracious backdrop for the fine country antiques in the "keeping" room with its crackling fireplace and authentic table and chairs; the sitting room with stenciled walls and wing chairs; and four wonderful guest rooms, some are in authentic canopied beds and antique chests; period wall coverings, decorator linens and rag rugs.
Country charm awaits you in any of the new rooms added in 1988. From the conference-meeting room with its house plants, to the eleven lovely guest rooms, you will be enchanted by quaint surroundings. Outside, the brick deck with umbrella tables, comfortable conversation areas and lovely shrubbery gardens beckon those who long the out of doors. Enjoy the rural setting with short trips to many points of local interest (information available), play golf, bicycle, jog, walk, go boating or sailing, shop, or just relax with a good book.
