The Grey Havens Inn Description:
Follow the Seguinland Road and you will find a Maine treasure - The Grey Havens Inn, and what a wonderful and grand old dame she is! Built in 1904, it has weathered time and the elements for over 100 years standing proudly high above the stony shores of Maine. Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places Grey Havens is believed to be the last of the classic shingle style Inns on the East Coast and has been referred to as one of the top three Inns in Maine. As many of you know Grey Havens Inn is the epitome of a relaxing Maine vacation. Furnished throughout with airy and eclectic cottage comfort, the oceanfront rooms command majestic 180-degree views of the island coastline. The four antique turret rooms are truly unique in this castle-by-the-sea. For almost thirty years the Hardcastle and Eberhart families have owned the Inn. It is they who have made the Inn so popular, with many guests returning year after year. Now, in 2005 a new chapter is beginning.
After much thought the Eberharts have graciously blessed us with the opportunity to continue the Inn’s traditions. We, too, are a local family with four children. For my wife, Cathy, ownership of Grey Havens is a life-long dream-come-true. Her ancestors the MacMahans were founders of Georgetown and my mother in law lived for a time at the Inn. Cathy fondly remembers the early days, working for Hilda Hardcastle, painting trim, wall-papering, welcoming new faces, seeing the guests so happy. With our ownership comes fresh excitement and enthusiasm. We do have a lengthy list of planned improvements to make. However, to those of you who know Grey Havens so well, I say “do not worry.” We have no plans to modernize or upset the Inn’s traditional and irreplaceable character. Rather, we will try to put some fresh sparkle into your annual pilgrimage to Maine.
We also plan to re-introduce a top quality restaurant. Many of you already look forward to the famous Grey Havens “Blueberries-Barely-Held-Together-by-a-Thin-Coating-of-Batter” breakfast muffins. Now, with the Lord’s Blessing, you’ll be able to relax with a great evening meal, a fine bottle of wine and, of course, that spectacular view. Maybe even dine outside on the endless wrap-around porch; watching the sunset in the cool evening breeze! Grey Havens is an easy-going unpretentious place. No one cares if you come down for a breakfast tray in your slippers, or talk all night (quietly) in the lounge. We have good books, fine music, our own dock, and a row boat for messing around on the tiny harbor, or paddling across to an island sanctuary. This is a place of lazy-days and fishing poles, flying kites and making memories. The old porch rockers just long to be sat-in after the cold winter and the view goes on forever. Relax with a stroll, or watch the surf on the shores of the mile-long Reid State Park just down the road.
