The Harbor House Inn Description:
Located in the most spectacular setting on the rugged Mendocino Coast, The Harbor House Inn, a destination in itself, offers the finest in luxury lodging and distinctive Seaside Dining. Surrounded by magnificent seaside gardens, giant redwoods and the wild Pacific Ocean, the Inn provides the best that man and nature, in concert, have to offer. If architecture can define its heritage, The Harbor House Inn symbolizes the splendor and significance of the Redwood Empire in its finest era. Designed by renowned architect Louis Christian Mullgardt in the same vernacular as his famous "Home of Redwood" built for the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, the home is a Craftsman style treasure.
Built in 1916 by the Goodyear Lumber Company, it had a multi-purpose existence. First as the home for chief executive of Goodyear's milling operation, which took place in Greenwood Cove below the house, and, secondly, as a showcase for the company's customer to witness firsthand the beauty and enduring qualities of redwood.
The living room, or "great room" (shown above), still in its original state, has an almost hallowed, cathedral presence as visitors are enveloped in the intricately crafted virgin redwood that clad the walls and vaulted ceiling. The now famous Mullgardt fireplace defines the center of the room. With spectacular views to the sea in the adjoining Seaside Dining room, the enchantment of this marriage of architecture and location is pervasive.
Throughout the house the majesty of the era lives on with high ceilings, original light fixtures, and large windows facing the gardens and sea. Refurbished with luxury in mind, the antiques and furnishings preserve the dignity and character of this masterpiece.
