Heaven Scent Bed & Breakfast Description:
A bit of history: Chick Cove Farm, formerly Glen Cove Farm, used to be part of the property still known as Woodport (a private estate which has the old steamboat landing for the plantation). Around WWII, it was a large chicken farm. Locals say that a row of chicken houses led down to the Piankatank River. There is but one of its many chicken houses still standing; it had the southern face removed so it could serve as equipment bays; one section still has the old nesting boxes. There is a large gambrel-roofed barn with two good horse stalls, long empty. In 1981, the old farm was purchased and the 1940 farmhouse - actually two buildings, combined with porches - was turned into a gourmet restaurant, Chick Cove Manor. The grounds were turned into an herb farm.
In the 1990s, the property became a private residence again, and the acres were given over to the commercial farming of corn and soybeans.
In 2003, it was acquired for the purpose of B&B operations. Commercial farming has ceased and gardens are being developed, starting with dozens of lilacs, roses, and peonies, as well as a kitchen garden. No poisons are used outdoors except on the small patch of fruit trees, so there is an abundance of wildlife. Clouds of butterflies frequent the herbs along the front walk, frogs hop in and out of the old fountain trough, a great variety and number of birds are seen and heard, and a number of small furry creatures keep the dog on duty.
We believe the house and grounds have a lot of charm. Come see if you agree. Let us offer you a relaxing and pleasurable getaway, for a night, a weekend, or a week.
