Tanasi Hill Bed & Breakfast Description:
Visit the previous century in contemporary comfort at Tanasi Hill Bed & Breakfast, a private 4-acre, downtown estate, in the rolling hills of Tennessee's second oldest city. This rambling, 3-story, all-brick Victorian has long been a site of hospitality. Built in 1860 by James Britton, good friend of President Andrew Johnson, the home once faced Main Street, separated from traffic by a deep, wooded ravine. Only the railroad, which came to Greeneville in the 1850's, announced its occasional presence, and still does.
In 1874, Col. John Doughty purchased the property, adding a second front entrance, a large wing, peaked tower, and wrap-around porches. He and his bride brought back a small magnolia from their Cuban honeymoon, planting it beside the tower. This Wedding Tree now rises higher than the roof, where many have exchanged vows beneath its boughs.
Time has been kind to Tanasi. Most of its trees and shrubbery are over a century old. Its roofs yet boast examples of Doughty's lightning rod manufacture. Eleven of its dozen fireplaces and mantles remain, with original tilework and ornate cast iron surrounds. Six oversized, mullioned French doors separate the downstairs rooms, underscoring the home's original open plan for entertaining.
Comfortably furnished in period antiques, Tanasi Hill provides a pleasant respite from today's hectic pace. Stroll beautifully rolling grounds, browse the on-site antique shop, or have light lunch and refreshment from our Tea Room. The home is ideal for small group meetings, special events, weddings, and receptions. An elegant breakfast is served in the 1874 dining room, from beautiful china set on an 1860's banquet table. Seating at smaller tables is available, if desired.
