Clearfield is nestled in a valley on the western slope of the Alleghenies and the town exudes old-time charm. Its lovely meandering river, tree lined streets, brick laid sidewalks, intricate scrollwork and sculpture on the facades of its old buildings, and street lamps reminiscent of Victorian gas fixtures, help to establish that charm. Christopher Kratzer House itself is unique; this Classic Revival house in the Old-Town Historic District predates the Victorian era in which most of these homes were built.
This home, the oldest house in town was built before 1840 by a noted lumberman, carpenter, architect, politician, and owner of
Clearfield's first newspaper. The house is set amongst many fine old trees, surrounded by a stone wall and picket fence and the rooms offer views of river and park. The grounds have a peaceful country ambience, yet the in-town location is convenient for guests. We are within walking distance of restaurants, shops, movie and community theaters, the public library and the
Clearfield County Historical Society Museum. In addition there is a playground in the park across the street for children. Browse in Ginny's Art Gallery and the "Attic Flea Market."
