In 1985, Steve and Kathi Walker purchased this grand colonial revival residence to create Culpeper's first bed and breakfast - Fountain Hall. Fountain Hall is built on land with an interesting history. The house is a unique blend of old style charm, superb architectural features and handcrafted woodwork with modern day amenities.
Fountain Hall is located on part of a large land tract originally owned by Virginia's Royal Governor, Sir Alexander Spotswood. The house began in 1859 as a simple country Victorian, named for Fountain Fisher Henry, a land developer of South East Street. The house withstood the devastation of the Civil War with battles fought in the town and county of Culpeper. In 1923, Jackson Lee Fray, a prominent businessman, bought the house and worked with a Philadelphia architect to construct the existing Colonial Revival house from the original one. A portion of the original structure remains intact at the rear of the property.
The B&B boasts ten-foot ceilings, a sweeping walnut staircase, three large common rooms and six tastefully appointed guest rooms. Each of the guest rooms has a private bath, air conditioning and fresh air windows. Some rooms offer private porches with views, whirlpool tub, or two-room suites. The grounds are meticulously maintained with seasonal flowers, mature trees, plush green lawn and brick herringbone walkways.
