My wife, son and I stayed three nights/two days at Lonesome Dove B&B during our visit to the US Coast Guard Academy. We had a wonderful experience; for the cost of a moderately-priced motel, we experienced so much more: heartfelt hospitality; exquisite baking and cooking; clean, quiet, cozy rooms; peaceful, bucolic surroundings. All within about twenty minutes of New London and the Academy, with Mystic Seaport and other attractions not much farther away.
Arriving late in the night, we were greeted with warm brownies and chilled wine...
Ruth rendered our breakfasts with five-star flair, as we were treated to wonderful renditions of French toast, blueberry pancakes and quiche with such trimmings as locally grown fruit and maple syrup! She had my coffee waiting every morning, along with my wife's tea and son's juice. There was always more than we could eat. Ruth must be prescient, too; the morning she served her wonderful quiche, our 17-yr.-old (who believes "real men don't eat quiche") was breakfasting with the cadets. Such is her remarkable ability to accommodate guests!
As for Leo, he is a raconteur extraordinaire! Veteran submariner whose cold war exploits found him hot on the trail of the Soviet Navy, his tales of derring-do make Tom Clancy novels dull by comparison!
And the MacDonald household is equipped with a set of remarkable felines, in three sizes: small (and aloof), medium (and gregarious), ENORMOUS (and sure contender for world heavy-weight title). My wife (who is not, by the way, a "cat person") found them perfectly charming and entertaining, as did my son and I.
A glance around the MacDonald property proves Ruth is an accomplished-- indeed, certificated-- Master Gardener! The MacDonald's tastefully-furnished home is surrounded by lush arrays of flowers, shrubs and trees. Birders ourselves, we enjoyed watching the feeders every morning and evening as Ruth pointed out members of the local species for us.
The morning of our departure, Leo
Friendly and Relaxing
Overall Rating:
My husband and I had a relaxing stay at this charming and homey bed and breakfast, which is just what we needed after my husbands battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma. He looked forward to this during his treatments and it was well worth the wait. Ruth and Leo are the perfect hosts. We enjoyed the 'royal treatment' as well as the feeling of being with friends. Max and Seth were generous with their attention as well. Every detail was 'just right'. Breakfast was 5 stars!!
Great Relaxing B&B

Nine Years and Counting
Overall Rating:
My wife and I make it a point to spend at least 1 weekend each year at our favorite B&B. The first time we went up was back in 1999 and my wife was still my girlfriend. I proposed to her during our stay. I swear to this day if we hadn't been at Lonesome Dove she'd have told me to take a hike. Seriously, Ruth & Leo are splendid hosts and we've gotten to be terrific friends. This B&B gets our highest recommendation and we're not easy to please.
Love at First Sight!
Overall Rating:
The Lonesome Dove B&B is a very special place to my husband and I. My husband proposed to me in the Lily Room, and we spent our honeymoon weekend at Lonesome Dove. We have visited every wedding anniversary (and holidays too!) and we will be married 8 years in September 2008! The first time I saw Lonesome Dove I was impressed with the beautiful surroundings and the inn itself is so cheery, clean, and welcoming! The innkeepers, Ruth and Leo are the nicest couple you ever want to meet. They treat you like you are a long lost friend come home -- and we have enjoyed their friendly hospitality and delicious cooking over the years -- that's why we keep coming back!
